Moxibustion, a traditional Chinese medicine therapy often used alongside acupuncture, has long been known for its healing properties. Now, modern research is shedding light on its effectiveness for reducing inflammation. A recent study, published in the well-regarded journal Inflammation, explored how moxibustion influences immune cells to combat inflammation.
How Moxibustion Reduces Inflammation
The study focused on macrophages, a type of immune cell that can either promote (M1) or reduce (M2) inflammation. Researchers discovered that moxibustion helps shift macrophages from the pro-inflammatory M1 state to the anti-inflammatory M2 state. This effect is linked to a protein called Sirtuin5 (SIRT5), which regulates inflammation by modifying an enzyme known as Glutamate Dehydrogenase 1 (GLUD1).
Using mice with arthritis, the researchers applied moxibustion and a SIRT5-inhibiting compound (MC3482) to observe their effects. They found that:
- Moxibustion increased M2 macrophages (inflammation-reducing cells).
- It decreased M1 macrophages (inflammation-promoting cells).
- The treatment led to a metabolic shift, lowering levels of succinate (which fuels inflammation) and increasing α-ketoglutarate (α-KG), a compound linked to healing.
These findings suggest that moxibustion naturally supports the body’s ability to regulate inflammation at a cellular level.
Scientific Backing & Journal Credibility
The study was published in Inflammation, a respected peer-reviewed journal from Springer New York. Inflammation has a 5-year Journal Impact Factor of 4.6, an h-index of 78, and is ranked in the second quartile (Q2) for Immunology and Allergy research. These metrics indicate that the journal is reputable and frequently cited in the scientific community.
What This Means for You
If you’re dealing with chronic inflammation, conditions like arthritis, or general pain, moxibustion may be a natural and effective option. Combined with acupuncture, it could help regulate your body’s immune response and reduce inflammation at its source. As always, consult a qualified healthcare provider to determine the best approach for your needs.
