Treating Cystitis and UTI with Chinese Medicine

Cystitis is urinary bladder inflammation that can result from many different syndromes. In most cases cystitis is a bacterial infection. Cystitis is also referred to as a urinary tract infection or UTI.

Urinary tract infections or UTIs affect millions of people a year, particularly women. In certain cases a UTI can cause pressure in the lower pelvis, painful urination or dysuria, frequent urination or polyuria, and urgent urination. Sometimes a person will experience nocturia or the need to urinate frequently at night. In extreme cases the urine might even contain blood or be dark and cloudy and have a strong smell. Occasionally there will be pain above the pubic bone or the lower back or abdomen. And in some cases a person will feel weak or feverish.

To treat cystitis effectively two things must be accomplished. The infection must be cleared from the body and balance must be restored and at the same time the immune system should be balanced.

In cases where someone gets repeated infections, or chronic cystitis, the body’s ecology, or the human microbiome must be addressed. Probiotics can be very helpful in restoring intestinal flora, as can certain foods like sauerkraut, miso and tempeh. It is now understood that as much as 80% of the immune system is regulated by intestinal flora. When the good bacteria is strong in the body, infections decrease.
