WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Quite simply, acupuncture is the placement of very thin, disposable needles into areas on the body called acupuncture points. Many patients come to realize that acupuncture does not hurt, and that the experience of getting acupuncture treatment is actually calming and peaceful. Some people take a nap on the treatment table, or deeply relax as the body’s natural painkillers, endorphins, travel through the circulatory system relieving chronic and acute pain.

Acupuncture is one technique of the art and science of Chinese medicine. Many practitioners of Chinese medicine also have training in Chinese herbal medicine, tui na (Chinese massage), and cupping therapy. Therefore, Chinese medicine is integrative medicine. James Whittle has training in all of the above modalities, which he learned in the US and China, and uses them in the practice of integrative natural medicine at our clinic.

Clearing up Misconceptions about Acupuncture

There are three prevalent misconceptions about the art and science of acupuncture:

1. People often think that acupuncture hurts, but people rarely feel much. You might feel a slight sensation or prick occasionally, but acupuncture is nothing like getting a vaccine shot or giving blood.

2. People sometimes think that acupuncture is is a procedure that is done only one time, like a steroid shot or surgery but acupuncture treatments need to be done in a series, often over the course of multiple weeks to achieve effective relief.

3. People occasionally think acupuncture is not based in science, but the fact is there is tremendous research that validates that acupuncture is evidence based.

The Science of Acupuncture

The most comprehensive and biggest systematic review of acupuncture for pain was published in 2012. It was completed with funding from the National Institutes of Health. The NIH proved that acupuncture is effective for pain conditions. You can read the New York Times blog post titled “Acupuncture Provides True Pain Relief in Study” here.

Occasionally people think that acupuncture treats only pain conditions, and this is also not true. The World Health Organization cites research on more than 28 health conditions that have been clinically researched and proven to be helped by acupuncture:

Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, allergic rhinitis (including hay fever), biliary colic, depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke), dysentery, acute bacillary dysmenorrhoea, primary epigastralgia (pain in the upper abdomen just below the ribs), acute abdominal pain (in peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis, and gastrospasm), facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders), headache, hypertension, essential hypotension, primary induction of labor, knee pain, leukopenia, low back pain, malposition of fetus, correction of morning sickness, nausea and vomiting, neck pain, pain in dentistry (including dental pain and temporomandibular dysfunction), periarthritis of shoulder, postoperative pain, renal colic, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, sprain, stroke, tennis elbow….and more…

Acupuncture Research

I have written an article about acupuncture research on the clinic blog in which I explain why acupuncture is indeed evidence based. Additionally I cite a list of relevant acupuncture research studies to illustrate the point that acupuncture is indeed scientific: you can read the “acupuncture research” article here.

Acupuncture is extremely popular in Asheville, NC, as many citizens in Buncombe county here prefer natural and side effect free approaches to health conditions. We always strive to help people who want to maximize their health and avoid surgery and drugs.

A few key points to remember about acupuncture:

1. Acupuncture involves the insertion of incredibly fine, surgical stainless steel needles into very specific parts of the body know as acupuncture points.
2. The Chinese have been using acupuncture continuously for more than five thousand years.
3. Acupuncture is safe, effective and affordable…and scientific!
